Tonight I tried renting "La dolce Vita" and came home with an empty DVD-case... darn people who return empty cases to the viseo-renting place! but having returned I came across a beautiful 1982 'art film' by Zeffirelli. What is it with this Italians and their films?
I have seen the opera twice before... one performance better than the other... nice story - tragic - dramatic - pasionate. Zeffirelli's film however is all of that and more - it's beautiful.
I must say that I remember nothing less of his other films I've watched... but this one must top even Taming of The Shrew. The colors, the faces... the wet cheeks of my date... who said one needs to show a horror movie to a girl to get your arm around her? Silly people.
Well - I better try and get some shut-eye. There's work to be done tomorrow.
PS The film said it was "subtitled for the hearing impaired"... isn't that funny? I mean - it's an opera... it's like having a braille outline of the Mona Lisa for the seeing-impaired.... the depth is lost.... I don't know if I make myself understood... silly stuff. But speaking of eyes... here's a beautiful line from the libretto:
Finche' avra' il ciglio lacrime
Io piangero' per te
It's a tragedy!
